iPhone switches from Nucleus to ThreadX
Based on information gathered by DevTeam, and posted on their site, the new Apple iPhone4 baseband radio now uses ThreadX in the Infineon PMB9800, or X-Gold 618, which provides baseband radio operations. Previous iPhones used Nucleus for this function. For the DevTeam comments, please click here.
"The DevTeam and others have been checking through the iPhone 4, and have noticed the baseband runs a completely different OS than on previous models. The iPhone 3G and 3G[S] both ran Nucleus OS on the PMB8878 baseband CPU (aka XGold 608), where the iPhone 2G ran the PMB8876 (aka S-Gold 2). iPhone 4 uses the PMB9800, or X-Gold 618 – running a separate OS – ThreadX, an RTOS by Express Logic.”

Invitation to participate in the free live Mapusoft-Express Logic webinar
on March 29 at 1:00 p.m. Central Time

ThreadX Webinar

Learn how applications written for Nucleus and other operating systems can be ported to Express Logic’s ThreadX RTOS with OS Changer. OS Changer is a C/C++ source-level virtualization technology that allows you to easily re-use your software developed for Nucleus, VxWorks, Linux/POSIX, pSOS, µITRON, and Windows on the ThreadX RTOS, while providing real-time performance. It eliminates the manual porting effort, saves money and shortens the time to market.

Get An Exemption from Preemption with Preemption-Threshold™ Scheduling
in the ThreadX RTOS
by John A. Carbone, Express Logic, Inc.

ThreadX is the only RTOS with Preemption-Threshold™ Scheduling, an advanced technology from Express Logic that reduces the number of context switches in real-time systems, while still preserving their ability to meet deadlines. This brief blog describes Preemption-Threshold Scheduling (PTS) and contains links to several additional papers on the subject. Following is an excerpt from a study showing the impact of Using PTS.

Downloadable Modules Bring Big OS
Features to Embedded Systems

In this webinar, Express Logic's John Carbone describes a new technology introduced at Embedded World 2011. This technology, called "Downloadable Application Modules," generally found in large operating systems such as Windows, Linux, and VxWorks, now is brought into the realm of small-footprint, efficient RTOSes such as Express Logic's ThreadX(r) RTOS.

Downloadable Application Modules enable manufacturers to use less memory, yet still offer robust functionality in their consumer, medical and industrial products. In addition, it enables field update of systems that require additional functionality or correction of detected faults. Downloadable Application Modules from Express Logic bring big system features to small-footprint RTOSes.
